design build houses

This is one of our all-time favorite projects.

The client was inspired by Michael Webb’s book, Brave New Houses – Adventures in Southern California. The book features homes that express the wants and desires of inspired individuals, who decided to please themselves first, defy conventional wisdom, and collaborate with talented architects and gifted contractors.

The projects speak to the present with soaring volumes - flooded with light, and an openness to, and engagement with, the natural environment.

A Design Build Project

Inspired with the notion of owning a one-of-a-kind dream home, the owners selected the design/build process for their project.

Sometimes referred to as the “Master Builder Approach” – Design Build is highly prized for its single point of responsibility, quality control, early completion and reduction in overall construction cost.

The home responds to its arid site with the integration of native and drought tolerant plantings. Gravel, boulders and linear raised planting beds compliment and add texture, structure and form to the exterior design. The entry court yard is open and welcoming – yet provides a certain level of privacy for the occupants.

Space to Breathe

Upon entering the home visitors welcome the calming environment – yet sense a sophisticated integration of design and materials. It was the early consideration and integration of finish materials during the design process that makes this home sing from all corners.

The large open floor plan, coupled with numerous punched openings of fixed glass, and large expanses of movable glass, flood the rooms with an abundance of natural light.

This creates an effortless relationship between the indoors and outdoors that engages the occupants. It’s as if every room has a private landscaped courtyard.

Bold Design

Bold Architect Design

Mitered corner glass expresses bold design. This technique, first pioneered by renowned architect Frank Lloyd Wright, was used in several locations throughout the house. By cantilevering the structural load of two adjoining walls - it opens an unexpected location, the corner of any room, to the outdoors.

Master Suite

Dream Master Suite Construction

The very private master suite occupies the west wing of the home. It includes a large private sitting area, a magnificent resort-like master bathroom, and a custom stainless steel fireplace, along with elegant and sophisticated finish materials.

Challenging Tradition

Modern Home Design Contractors

The neutral palette and austere design of the master bath soothes the mind and body, and relaxes the soul. A laminar flow tub fill-faucet was placed in the ceiling of the master bath. Its modern elegance and characteristics challenges traditional conventions.

Cocktail Pool

Backyard Pool Contractor

The integration of a soaking / cocktail pool was an important component of this desert home. The oversized baja-shelf for relaxing and sunning at comfortable temperatures features a convenient patio umbrella while the pool’s rectilinear form integrates well with the homes style.

Why Design-Build

The design-build method integrates design and construction early in the process, and allowed October 5 to order building materials, cabinets, hardware, tile, windows, etc. before construction began. Within a short time the cabinets, tiles, windows, hardware, appliances, etc. were delivered to the job site, inspected and locked inside a large shipping container ready for installation. There were no delays due to missing materials.
