October 5 / Park Estates II

You’ve heard it before, “This is a must see home.” However, this extraordinary Park Estates custom home, designed and reconstructed by October 5, is undeniably a work of art. Offering superior design, where form and function converge, it attends to every detail with quality and perfection. The open-floor plan blurs the lines between indoor and outdoor spaces, light abounds in every room, yet the space remains purposely private and intimate.

Originally constructed in 1953, the home had not undergone any remodeling or updating. During construction, the house was all but demolished - leaving only the rough framing and portions of the exterior stucco and siding. Earthquake updates, 200 amp electrical service, beefed-up insulation, plumbing, heating and air-conditioning, smooth drywall, wide-plank flooring, bathrooms, kitchen, and dual-glazed windows supported the bulk of the project, which lasted 4 ½ months.

Open Design

The homeowners’ wish list included a greater connection with the beautiful outdoors, an open floor plan, a premium master suite, larger bedrooms, a separate laundry room, walk-in pantry, and plenty of natural light. To make that strong connection with the outdoors, the fireplace had to go. It was awkwardly located, poorly designed and sometimes filled the living room with smoke. With the fireplace gone, the great room opens to an expansive patio.

Rethinking The Kitchen

In an open floor-plan style the October 5 Design/Build Team makes every effort to minimize the traditional look of a kitchen.

Touch-latch hardware and integrated handles were chosen over customary door knobs and drawer pulls.

Symmetry and balance, along with custom appliances panels are key components of this sophisticated design.

Everyone loves a white bathroom floor, but all too often it’s difficult to keep white grout clean. In this contemporary master bath, solid sheets of white quartz were installed for flooring soon after completing the framing, which was protected during construction. The property slopes approximately 11 ½” from front to back. This created an opportunity for a slightly sunken shower with an exterior fiberglass door that opens directly to the outdoor spa.

Master Bedroom

The master bedroom is spacious, filled with glass and light, and bears a sense of sleeping outdoors. Floor to ceiling mirrored doors reflect the beauty of the back garden.

With clean contemporary lines, the modern floor plan, great for entertaining, offers a celebrated life-style. What a beautiful and relaxing way to enjoy life!
